Better Streets Geelong
Get kids active
Let’s go retro: like in the 1970s where 80% of kids walked or rode to school. We want Geelong kids active and independent. Today it’s just a teeny 20% of kids who get to feel the breeze in their hair as they meander home from school.
Have fun
We don’t have much fun on most streets in Geelong in the late 2020s. Yet, if only the streets were a little slower, a little quieter, a little greener a little easier to cross, more of us would be out there - walking or riding to work, to the shops, the cafe, the library, netball training, choir practice, to visit your mates. And if some of the street was reclaimed for a pocket park, or a basket ball hoop, or a shared veggie patch, or a wildlife garden or seating to sit out the front of your favourite cafe, just to watch the world go by, we may indeed have created a little more fun on the streets of Geelong.
Be Safe
It’s the number one rule, but it’s hard if you are ten years of age and want to ride to the river, or the skate park at the waterfront or just to visit your granny. Mum’s just not going to let you out. Yet if mum was living in Paris right now, she would. Both of you could travel safely on the hundreds of kms of bike paths built in the last ten years. Ah, to be as safe as a Parisian in Geelong.
If you want Better Streets in Geelong join us. We are actively working to build a coalition of community groups and individuals who only want to see better streets for everyone who lives in and visits the town we love-Geelong.
