Victoria Adopts 30 km/h in Latest Speed Zoning Policy — A Game-Changer for Safer Streets
Victoria’s transport policy just got a big upgrade. The state government’s Speed Zoning Policy Edition 3 now formally includes 30 km/h limits for many local and city streets. streets-alive-yarra.org
What’s new
The update embeds “Community Wellbeing” as a guiding principle, meaning streets should be safe and pleasant for walking and cycling, not just moving cars. streets-alive-yarra.org
Local governments now have discretionary power to set 30 km/h limits on local and residential streets (subject to departmental approval).
In activity centres and “city streets,” 30 km/h is now the default unless there’s a separated cycling facility.
Around schools, streets adjoining school gates or active travel precincts are now expected to become 30 km/h zones.
Why this matters
This shift is more than policy — it’s a signal that safer speeds are no longer fringe: they’re mainstream. Victoria’s move gives councils the mandate and the backing to bring 30 km/h to more neighbourhoods. And for communities, it means safer streets, more walking and cycling, and fewer speed-related tragedies.
But the change won’t happen without action. Councils across Victoria must now step up, adopt the new guidelines, and design their streets accordingly.
🎯 Better Streets is calling on all Victorian councils — review the new policy, commit to implementing 30 km/h zones, and partner with your community to make it real.
