Thousands of people now safer on Oxford St

I calculated I’ve cycled this thousands of times since I move to the Eastern suburbs 40 years ago
— Alison, Bondi Junction local

On Saturday 16th August I went to the Lord Mayor of Sydney’s celebratory opening of the new two-way separated cycleway along Oxford and Liverpool Streets, between Taylor Square and Castlereagh Street, Sydney New South Wales.

It’s 40 years since I moved to the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. I must have made thousands of cycling trips along this heavily trafficked route into the city, riding to work, seeing a play, taking part in a rally, going to the dentist, or meeting up with friends. Other trips took me through the city and beyond, via the Pyrmont Bridge to Drummoyne or Gladesville, or over the Harbour Bridge to visit a friend in North Sydney, or down to Circular Quay to catch the ferry to Manly.

The new cycleway is a life-changer for me at the age of 78! It’s a much safer, more enjoyable journey, not only for an old lady, but for anyone, young and old, who wants to ride their bicycle. With this new cycleway the route down Oxford Street now links with other parts of the City of Sydney’s growing bike network, making it easier and safer to ride to other favourite destinations, such as Alexandria, Newtown and Balmain.

Special thanks to all the brilliant people who’ve now made my bicycle journey into the city a special joy. Thanks to the Lord Mayor Clover Moore, the City of Sydney, its staff and consultants, the NSW Government for its funding and technical contributions, BIKEast, Bicycle NSW and Better Streets!

There is still one missing link needed to complete the safe journey from Sydney’s East into the city. Transport for NSW are working on this final critical link along Oxford Street East, from the Paddington Gates at Centennial Park to Taylor Square! We’re all looking forward to it.
