Big news for Sydney: The MetroWay is coming!
First Sydney-siders got the GreenWay - soon they’ll also have the MetroWay!
It was great to feel the collective excitement at this Monday morning’s announcement of the MetroWay - a new 13.8km active transport corridor which will run alongside the Sydney Metro Sydenham–Bankstown line.
Additionally the corridor will be linking Bankstown to Iron Cove by connecting with the GreenWay at Dulwich Hill.
With today’s announcement from Transport Minister John Graham the corridor is now out for design and construct tender.
Projects like the GreenWay and MetroWay show what’s possible when we rethink land already in public hands, or land undergoing urban transition.
As Sydney grows and densifies, access to parkland, active recreational space and cooling waterways becomes more important.
Blue-green corridors are one of the smartest ways to respond. Done well, they deliver:
Safer walking and cycling connections
Recreation and open space
Urban cooling and biodiversity
Links to schools, transport and town centres
which additionally improve local business.
All in one coordinated move.

This leads to the bigger question: where else could this model apply?
If we systematically mapped underused public land and infrastructure corridors across metropolitan Sydney, how many more neighbourhoods could gain safer, greener connections?

At Better Streets Australia, we’ll continue advocating for more green and active transport links across the city.
To continue this conversation, we’re currently planning a panel discussion exploring the journey of the GreenWay, from early advocacy to delivery, and what we can learn from the process.
