Shared e-bikes are already changing how people move around New South Wales. Ridership is growing fast. The journeys people are making — to train stations, to work, across Local Government boundaries — show that this is transport, not recreation.

But the regulatory framework being proposed to govern it doesn't yet quite match that reality.

This week Better Streets made a submission to Transport for NSW's e-micromobility sharing schemes reform consultation, and our message is straight forward.

NSW Parliament has debated 30 km/h safer speed limits for local streets — and while the bill didn’t pass, the conversation has shifted. The challenge now isn’t the evidence, but building the local case studies and confidence to make safer speeds a reality.

Usage tripled in its first fortnight. Seven hectares of new public open space unlocked. Twenty-five years in the making. Better Streets Australia brought together some of the people who made it happen, to unpack the GreenWay story - and what it means for the future of walking and cycling in Sydney.

Rising fuel prices are a wake-up call. Governments can act now — with safer speeds, better public transport and investment in walking and cycling — to reduce costs and give people real choices.
